My son is closing in to his PhD thesis submission in March 2024. His thesis topic is, numerical studies of fires of different scales, the works out of which have been published by reputed journals and presented at international conferences in Japan, Taiwan and other IITs too. He had pursued MTech at NIT Trichy specialising in Thermal Power Engineering and worked at Rolls Royce India Pvt. Ltd. prior to starting his PhD. He is interested in research and therefore aims to join the faculty at reputed education/research. However, at present, he has some offers from MNCs as well, one of which he could join immediately post submission of his thesis. He started his fire research with an aim to ultimately provide fire safety solutions to all kinds of human/natural activities, a reason why his research works has included fires as small as one over a small piece of paper to those as large as wildland fires. By working in the MNC for the time being, he aims to get more practical insights into fire safety practices in developed countries, which could be valuable during his academic research in later stages. He has the option to secure a postdoctoral position in one of the high ranked QS universities as well.
Apart from academics and research, he has been highly active in social life as well, a testimony of which was showcased during his tenure as research affairs secretary at IIT Madras, representing around 4000 MS and PhD scholars, wherein he could directly contribute to the lives of his peers and fetch monetary and other benefits from the IITM administration and also represent them in a few of the joint IITs and ministerial meetings. Coming to his hobbies, he likes to travel but feels the most comfortable at home only. In free time, we have seen him playing chess and arranging his mess. In his childhood, he used to do gardening. Though many good traits about our son has been shared but we feel, his bio would be incomplete without sharing some of his flaws too. He is homesick and finds comfort only in the family setting and since he had stepped out of our house for his higher studies, there has not been a single day on which we didn't talk at least 3 to 4 times. Sometimes, he wastes his previous times for others in need. He is an effective communicator and therefore his friends/colleagues use this to their advantage. He used to be vocal in circumstances when most of us would have probably kept mum. However, he has learnt this as a flaw that takes the peace away and has stopped doing completely.
